In the City of David
The dawn from on high that Zechariah prophesied has arrived. He is born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger. But these are so much more than superfluous details. This baby is born in the city of David because he is from the house and lineage of David. He is the answer to God's promise that David's heir would sit on the throne and rule forever a Kingdom with no end. He is great David's greater Son! He is born in Bethlehem - "the house of bread." But this child born in the house of bread actually himself is The Bread of Life. And he's laid in a manger because there is no room for them. He came to his own, but his own did not receive him. This small detail (no room available) will only be the first in the life of Isaiah's Suffering Servant that we esteemed not.
The question for us today is, "Will we make the same mistake?" Your King has come. The very sustenance of life has come and presented himself to you. Will you esteem him? Or do you also have no room? Like the rich young ruler, will you walk away sad because the rooms of your heart are too occupied by other guests?
